When she came to DEP she personally retrained herself to develop a completely new set of skills, quite unrelated to her initial education and experience with urban forestry. She adapted well to the needs of the department in developing skills required to analyze, and develop recommendations on permit requests for access to public water and sewer service. Processing these permits required organization of many public hearings over the years and customer service skills necessary for diplomatic handling of often difficult customers.
"Dot's personal retraining efforts resulted in adeptness in applying DEP's GIS capabilities and other databases to informatively package recommendations on permit requests, complete with succinct, easy-to-understand explanatory maps and tables that were always much appreciated by our elected officials. In the past several years, Dot has also been able to reuse some of her original training in trees to help Laura in DEP's startup activities to find new planting sites and carry out inspections needed for the street tree program.
